Combination dog park and ice cream shop replacing popular Columbus dessert spot
There’s an exciting addition to the town’s treat scene – one that will leave your dogs’ tails wagging.
Double Happy, a beloved soft serve and milkshake walk-up on the Southwest side at 1280 Brown Rd., is undergoing quite the transformation. The business was recently acquired by Lauryn and Evan Betterton, who have some pawsome plans up their sleeves to rebrand this ice cream shop as Bumble’s Backyard. Don’t worry though – they’re still planning on continuing their delicious soft serve, but they’re also adding on a coffee shop and dog park next Spring.
And not just any dog park – it will be a haven that prioritizes comfort for both humans and their furry best buddies.
“As crazy dog people, my husband and I wanted a place to go that felt relaxing, comfortable, and fun for us and Bumble, our 6 year old Labradoodle,” explained Lauryn. Their vision is to offer a community-focused, uplifting, dog-friendly hangout spot that welcomes dog owners or dog lovers with open paws. Picture this: a fenced-in, membership based dog park, where humans can sip on One Line coffee or savor an ice cream cone while lounging on cozy seating, all the while watching their pups socialize and have a great time. Lauryn emphasized that they want to evoke the relaxed atmosphere of chilling about with your friends and their dogs in someone’s backyard.

“Typical dog parks are usually just a space where a city puts a fence around extra land, with no monitoring to make sure dogs don’t get into scuffles. There’s no one to clean up after the dogs when they go to the bathroom, and no one to make sure gates are closed. There’s often no shade and no water. And there’s nowhere for the humans to sit comfortably. Those dog parks take away the fun of being able to relax with your dog,” emphasized Lauren. “As we’re thinking about designing the park, we’re thinking about lots of seating, and a space that’s calm and comfortable enough to even take work calls while your dog plays.”
The Bettertons want your dog to be safe and well first and foremost. There will be plenty of shade, lots of water, and a vigilant pup-sitter to monitor play-time. Not only is their artificial turf weather resistant, sanitary, and heat reflective to help keep paws cool, but even the ice cream they serve, with milk from Indian Creek Creamery and peanut butter from Crema, is chemical-free and safe for dogs to consume.
For now, the Double Happy location will continue to serve ice cream and milkshakes until the end of ice cream season, probably until October or November, and then temporarily close for renovations. They’ll reopen by Spring, transitioning fully to Bumble’s Backyard.
If you can’t wait until then (I can’t blame you!), the Bettertons are organizing pop-ups at the Double Happy location, starting this Saturday, the 22nd, where people can bring their dogs and check out the space before committing to a membership next Spring. Fun bandanas and headshots by a local photographer will be featured at this weekend’s pop-up, too. Tickets can be purchased here, and each one comes with a large milkshake or large coffee.
