Jennings Java opening “dream cafe” with first full retail space

One of the city’s most popular artisan coffee roasters will bring its “dream cafe” to Merrion Village.

Jennings Java Coffee Roasters—the Columbus company known for bike-delivered coffee and canned cold brew—will open its first full retail cafe space at 116 Moler Ave.

The Merrion Village space formerly housed Bake Me Happy before the gluten-free bakery relocated to its current location on Whittier Street.

The Columbus coffee duo, which is owned and operated by friends Daniel Jennings and AJ Kazmierczak, currently operates a roastery and production facility at 1193 S. Front St., which is also in Merrion Village.

According to Kazmierczak, the current location does offer some retail service to customers, but functions as a carryout-only “farmers-market style” space where patrons can grab roasted beans, a drip coffee or nitro cold brew to-go.

“The new space will allow us to have a separate production area and full cafe space,” Kazmierczak said. “We’ll be able to offer espresso based drinks to all of our friends as well as seating and bar top areas around the cafe.”

Kazmierczak referred to the new space as Jennings Java’s “dream cafe.”

Pastries and baked goods will be available for purchase, with the potential to add even more food options down the line. Jennings Java hopes to open the new location by June, but admitted the actual date may be pushed back, due to a number of factors.

While the cafe will boost Jennings Java’s retail presence, Kazmierczak also believes the company’s online and wholesale business stands to grow “exponentially” from the move.

“As for what this means for our business, this is monumental. Born from a college dorm room, faced with a ‘make or break’ year in 2020. We believed in the good people of Columbus, Merion Village, and German Village and went all in,” Kazmierczak said.

Jennings Java will be one of four tenants in the Moler Street building. The Century Events venue and Whirlwind Dance will join the cafe, alongside a fourth tenant that has not been determined yet.
