Popular Upper Arlington eatery reopens after lengthy hiatus

Basil Thai is back.

The popular family of Thai eateries once boasted as many four locations throughout the greater Columbus area, but last year, Basil took a backseat to owner Rhome Ruanphae’s fast-casual concept Buddha Bowl.

After closing Buddha Bowl in Clintonville (which will be replaced by Preston’s: A Burger Joint) last month, Ruanphae has reopened the Upper Arlington location of Basil, which is located at 3706 Riverside Dr. This restaurant is currently the only Basil location open, and before reopening, Basil had been closed since February.

The Upper Arlington restaurant is currently offering delivery service only. Orders can be placed through its website, DoorDash or Uber Eats. Rhuanphae said Basil has adopted a “wait and see” approach to whether or not it will reopen its dining room.

Ruanphae said staffing was a major factor in the decision to close Buddha Bowl, and it’s currently one of the reasons the eatery has opted for delivery service only. After closing Buddha Bowl, that eatery’s staff was moved to Basil in Upper Arlington.

Another hurdle for the restaurant, he said, is the potential redevelopment of Golden Bear Plaza, where the restaurant is located.

Basil is currently open from 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. daily.
