Proposal for development that would demolish iconic Columbus bar, multiple restaurants passes zoning committee

Just over a month after the University Area Commission Zoning Committee sent back a proposal that would demolish the long-standing Bier Stube in favor of a housing development, a revised plan has been approved.

During a meeting Monday night, the committee approved Buckeye Real Estate’s proposal for a six-story building with just over 100 units that would tear down Bier Stube, alongside three other businesses on the site: 14-0 Express, Portofino’s Pizza and Yau’s Chinese Bistro.

The proposal passed 4-0, and will be considered next at the University Area Commission’s general meeting on March 15. If it passes here, the project would go before the Columbus City Council.

The development would be located on the corner of W. Ninth Avenue and North High Street.

Justin Garland, a representative for Buckeye Real Estate at the meeting, said the development (for which he estimated rent would be $1,500 for a one-bedroom apartment) would take the first steps in connecting University District to the Short North.

Other Columbus bars, like Threes Above High, have been vocal against the proposal on social media.
