Columbus Zoo allowing visitors to share messages of support with Jack Hanna and family amid Alzheimer’s fight
The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium has created a channel for supporters to send their own personalized messages to longtime conservationist Jack Hanna and family during his battle against Alzheimer’s disease.
Hanna, the longtime face of the Columbus Zoo, stepped down from his role of Director Emeritus in 2020.
Yesterday, Columbus Zoo President & CEO Tom Schmid said the Zoo has set up a mailbox at the Zoo’s front entrance for visitors to share their messages with the Hanna family.

“We have set up a green mailbox inside the guest relations office at the Zoo’s front entrance where notes of love and support to Jack and the Hanna family can be dropped off. You are also welcome to email [email protected] to share kind words directly with the Hanna family,” the statement reads.
Schmid also included his own message of support for the longtime Columbus Zoo director.
“We are grateful to the Hanna family for sharing such a personal update about Jack’s private battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Their decision to talk about Jack’s health challenges brings awareness to this disease that affects more than six million Americans of all ages. We stand in support of Jack, Suzi, and the Hanna family. Jack is and will always be an integral part of the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds’ history and legacy,” his statement reads.
