Columbus suburb named one of the world’s top “smart communities” this week
The city of Hilliard is making a positive impression on the rest of the world, and you don’t have to just take their word for it.
On Feb. 23, Hilliard was named Smart21 of 2023 community by Intelligent Community Forum.
The nomination is part of a program that selects only 21 cities across the globe each year demonstrating “best practices in broadband implementation, workforce development, digital inclusion, innovation, advocacy, and sustainability,” according to a press release.

“Winning a place among this year’s Smart21 communities is an incredible badge of honor and puts the City of Hilliard in the global spotlight,” Hilliard City Manager Michele Crandall said. “Hilliard is connected, smart, and sustainable. We’re excited to show others how HiFiO and Hilliard City Lab are providing services that improve the quality of life for our residents and help companies turn their ideas into reality.”
Crandall believes Hilliard’s nomination likely stems from the city’s construction of a HiFio fiber-optic network and its embrace of smart technologies in its infrastructure.
