Rochelle Pate, the Columbus military veteran better known as the FOOD Soldier, has unexpectedly passed away.

A 2021 Spirit of Columbus Award recipient, Pate led the FOOD Soldier program, which operated Facebook group overseeing free food giveaways to those in need throughout central Ohio.

“I am a military vet on a personal mission to win the war on HUNGER, food insecurity and unhealthy food consumption in the greater Columbus/Franklin County area. This is my passion,” a description on the FOOD Soldier Facebook page reads.

“Roshelle was a bright star in the community and will be deeply missed. She has touched the lives of so many in the community and abroad, it is our turn to give back to her,” the page reads.

The GoFundMe has currently raised more than its initial $10,000 goal.
