Cornhole for a Cause: The 9th-annual WSA cornhole tournament, silent auction raising money for local non-profit

What’s better than a casual game of cornhole surrounded by friends? How about one that’s raising money for a great cause?

For the 9th year, the Columbus-based architecture and design group WSA Studio will be holding its annual Cornhole Tournament, which combines industry professionals, a silent auction benefiting a local non-profit and (you guessed it) plenty of cornhole.

The event will take place at WSA’s Columbus Studio–which is located at 982 S. Front St.–and will headlined by a cornhole tournament and silent auction. Funds raised from the auction and ticket sales will benefit Sanctuary Night, a Columbus non-profit dedicated to providing a safe space for vulnerable women, and affording them a place to eat, rest and connect.

Tickets can be purchased here, and donations can be made here.

The 9th-annual evening is dedicated to a good cause, while still boasting a fun and celebratory atmosphere, with many teams dressing up in coordinated costumes (including one competitor donning Guy Fieri attire last year), pun-filled team names and more. This year’s tournament will also feature a local food truck and live music, with beverages provided by Saucy Brew Works and Parsons North Brewing.

“It’s never a dull night,” said WSA Studio Operations Coordinator and event organizer Chelsea Denman. “It’s fun to watch the competition, but there’s so much more to it than cornhole. We have some great silent auction items, and you can’t beat free food and drinks. And after we crown a champion and tally up the donations, we end the night with a concert. It’s not the office party you want to miss.”

The silent auction will feature donations from professional sports teams, major events (including the always-popular Memorial Tournament), plus items from local and national brands.

“For us, people are at the center of everything we do,” Denman said. “When you look back at how the tournament started it was just another way for us to get some friends together and support a good cause. Now it’s become a huge event that brings the architecture and design community together to support some really impactful groups in our city.”

WSA aims to top its donation total from last, which won’t be a small feat, either. In 2022, WSA raised $15,000 for Star House, the largest third-party amount the local nonprofit has ever received.

“Since it’s gotten so big WSA doesn’t put a team in the tournament anymore, but we’re still competitive ourselves. Raising more than we did the year before is always our goal – that’s becoming our new challenge,” Denman said.
