Is your kid an Olympian? USA Luge team hosting tryouts this weekend, and you’re invited

Sav McKee

Since 1985, the USA Luge Slider Search has traveled more than 225,000 miles to introduce the sport of luge to more than 20,000 young athletes and potential Olympians.

And their next stop? Columbus, OH.

This weekend, May 11 and 12, boys and girls ages 10-13 are invited to stop by Big Run Park at 4205 Clime Road and learn how to Ice Luge. Guided by U.S. Olympic and National Team coaches and athletes, participants will be taught the basics of riding a luge sled at controlled speeds, including positioning, steering, and stopping. Once the skills are developed, athletes will take several runs down the paved luge course.

Those who show promise are then invited to Lake Placid N.Y. or Park City, Utah to try luge on ice at a USA Luge sanctioned training site. The top young athletes from this group are then selected for next year’s development team.

Most of the current U.S. Junior National Team was recruited through the USA Luge Slider Search! So this is a pretty big deal.

Three clinic times are offered this weekend: 9 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Each participant needs to register for one of those clinic times by calling 1-800-USA-LUGE, or register online here. A parent or legal guardian must accompany each participant. For more information, check out this invitation.

The search is free, and you even get a cool White Castle USA Luge Slider Search t-shirt just for attending!
