In 2019, I moved to German Village from my tiny, cheap apartment in Olde Towne East. My mom made it a point to bring up how expensive my rent was almost every time she visited. Now, five years later in the same home with the same monthly rent amount, my mom emphasizes how she can’t believe my rent is so cheap now – that’s how fast rental costs in Columbus have changed.

And my mom isn’t the only one that noticed. In a study by The New York Times, using Zumper’s rent report, Columbus was ranked the 4th city with the greatest one-year rent increases. The study primarily focused on one-bedrooms rental costs.

The average one-bedroom rental cost is $1,130 in Columbus right now.

One thing remains true: New York City still seems like the place to be. And for those that can’t be there (due to the $4,200 rental prices), well, Columbus, Syracuse, Chicago, and Cleveland are cool, too.
