One of the top prestigious film festivals in the world could be moving to this Ohio city

You’ve probably heard of Sundance Film Festival – movies such as Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs all debuted at this highly acclaimed film festival over the past four decades.

For more than 40 years, the international film festival called cozy Park City, Utah its home, but there’s now a consideration for it to be moved elsewhere.

And what better place to host one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals for independent filmmakers than the culturally rich, Cincinnati, OH?

The Sundance Institute has carefully selected the finalist cities for their possible relocation in 2027, which is when their lease in Park City ends. In addition to staying in Park City and Salt Lake City, other cities considered to host the festival include Atlanta, Boulder, Louisville, Santa Fe, and of course, the one we’re especially rooting for – Cincinnati.

To determine their finalists, the Sundance Institute considered infrastructure, event capabilities, and a “welcoming” community that fosters diversity and culture. The selection committee is planning to visit each of the finalist cities in the coming weeks. They’re having conversations with governors, mayors, and film commissioners across the country, too.

Of course, many of these cities’ mayors are making pitches to Sundance. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said in a statement, “For over a generation, with consistent support from the city of Cincinnati, Film Cincinnati has positioned the Cincinnati region as a go-to community for movies. We know how to nurture creative talent and the skilled workers behind the scenes, and we know how to celebrate them when they are on the big screen. Easily accessible to so much of the U.S. population, the Queen City is also a big league city for broader tourism, handling major events with professionalism and capacity. Both Cincinnati and the Sundance Film Festival are on the precipice for great change and we look forward to partnering and evolving together.”

Fingers crossed for this Ohio city!
