This Columbus suburb hosts ‘North America’s largest ‘walking-only race,’ and it’s happening this weekend

Did you know competitive walking, also known as racewalking, has a hub right here in central Ohio?

The 20th annual New Albany Walking Classic will take place Sept. 15 at 8 a.m.

Billed as “North America’s largest walking-only race,” the Walking Classic operates both a Competitive Division, where participants receive bibs and are timed, and a Casual Division for those who just want to walk.

“There’s a division for people who are very competitive and want to go fast, and then there’s one for those who want to take a causal stroll and just want to take a walk for the day. You have all levels,” said Race Manager Linda Romanoff.

There is both a 5K and 10K race, but registration is closed for both. You can still take a trip to New Albany to watch, however, and it’s never too early to start training for next year. This year, Romanoff said the race has 1,200 participants.

Launched in 2005 as a way to promote physical activity, all proceeds from the race benefit Healthy New Albany. You can make a donation here if you’d like to support the local nonprofit.
