20 years after closure, bygone restaurant chain hints a 2025 comeback
There was one place, and one place only, to go for your birthday dinner in the ’90s and share a giant fried ice cream with your family and friends.
And that was Chi’s Chi’s of course. In the heyday of the 90s, Chi’s Chi’s was the place to be. But by 2004, every single one of the iconic restaurant chains closed.
But the 90s are back, baby! In more ways than just fashion.

PR Newswire reported that nearly 20 years after closing, Chi Chi’s is set to make a comeback in an agreement with Hormel Foods, owner of the CHI-CHI’S™ trademarks. In this deal, Michael McDermott, the son of CHI-CHI’S™ founder, can use the CHI-CHI’S™ name on physical restaurant locations, set to open as early as 2025.
“I still have fond memories of growing up in the CHI-CHI’S™ restaurants that my father built throughout their time, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my own career in the restaurant industry,” said McDermott. “We have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today’s consumer – an updated dining experience with the same great taste and Mexican flavor.”
Fingers crossed Columbus is chosen for this Chi’s Chi’s revival.
