From meatball subs to hoagies, 614 Feast names the best sub sandwiches in Columbus

Known by many names—submarine (sub) sandwich, hoagie, grinder, hero, and probably a few others I’m forgetting—this classic meal always hits the spot. A great sub is all about balance: a variety of textures, bold flavors, and big enough to satisfy without being so overloaded that it’s impossible to take a bite. Italian and meatball subs are my personal favorites, so let’s get into my five favorite subs in Columbus:

Wario’s Beef & Pork (multiple)
Beloved Wario’s was recently featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, showcasing their incredible cheesesteaks, cold cuts, and specialty sandwiches. Their Sunday Special Meatball Sub is one of the best bites in the city. The house-made meatballs are perfectly tender, juicy, and well-seasoned, paired with provolone cheese and their signature marinara sauce. It’s a feast you don’t want to miss.

Yogi’s Hoagies & Dairy Bar (1274 Morse Rd.)
Serving high-quality, delicious meals since 1977, Yogi’s is a Columbus staple. The Franken Hoagie is scary good, stacked with salami, ham, turkey, roast beef, and provolone cheese, then topped with lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, olive oil, and spices. You can order it hot or cold, but I’m definitely on team hot.

Hoagie City (3870 Main St., Hilliard)
This cozy mom-and-pop deli in Hilliard serves massive, high-quality sandwiches using Dietz & Watson meats and cheeses on fresh Amoroso rolls. With three size options—mini, half, or whole—you can’t go wrong. My pick is their Italian Hoagie, loaded with provolone, pepper ham, cooked salami, hard salami, capicola, and pepperoni.

Borgata Pizza Cafe (multiple)
Known for their pizza and authentic Italian fare, Borgata also serves a standout Homemade Meatball Sub. The garlic butter-smothered bun holds three massive, house-made 4 oz meatballs, marinara sauce, and provolone cheese. It’s huge, indulgent, and absolutely delicious.

Smith’s Restaurant and Deli (3737 N. High St.)
Family-owned and operated since 1960, Smith’s is a Clintonville icon. Their 8-inch subs are oven-toasted to perfection. My favorite is the Super Smith, packed with capicola, hard salami, pepperoni, provolone, mozzarella, Romano, oregano, onions, and hot peppers. It’s a flavor-packed classic.
