New funeral home located in former chocolate factory to be state’s first with a liquor license

New funeral home located in former chocolate factory to be state’s first with a liquor license

The way Hunter Triplett sees it, the funeral industry as we know it is already transforming, and his new concept is just one of the first to fully embrace it.

The founder and owner of Evergreen Funeral Cremation and Reception, Triplett is planning to open Evergreen in early 2025, and–at least the way things stand currently–he doesn’t believe there will anything else like it in the state.

“A lot of people don’t really find the value in funeral service anymore, where you go for 1-2 hours and then depart,” he said. “With the rise of cremations and celebrations of life, people are moving on from traditional services. A lot of people I’ve dealt with are going to event centers, going to eateries and food establishments to celebrate. The concept was to capture that and keep it in-house.”

Evergreen–while it will still offer traditional casket burials–plans to embrace the shifting consumer desire in funeral services by offering multiple event venues. Located at 1855 E. 17th Ave., the former home of Maramor Chocolates, the space will offer two chapels as gathering spaces, boasting 2,000 square feet and 6,000 square, and a capacity of 250 people.

The new concept is also in the process of landing a liquor license, which it would use to serve alcohol at in-house life celebrations. According to Triplett, it would make Evergreen the first funeral parlor to have a liquor license in the state.

“Our application is currently pending, but been I’ve told there shouldn’t be any issues with it,” he said. “We really believe Columbus is ready for a service like this.”
