Local diner owner acquires popular 45 year old steakhouse that’s the last remaining one in the nation

In May, the last standing York Steak House was put up for sale. The owner, Jay, who’s worked there for 44 years, and has owned it for 35 of those years, is putting down his knife and apron and retiring.

Longtime customers were devastated, fearful that the steakhouse would be torn down, or new owners would change it completely. One loyal customer commented on York Steak House’s post that, “This restaurant has a fan base as serious as Batman or Star Wars. Whoever buys this would be a fool to change anything, because the restaurant comes with a built-in clientele.”

It appears that the owner of Starliner Diner is going to make a lot of Columbus residents happy.

Starliner Diner, a local diner that’s been a staple in the community for decades (and which recently acquired all of Nancy’s Home Cooking recipes — check out that story here), announced today that they have also acquired the famous York Steak House, located at 4220 West Broad St.

“This in no way will hurt Starliner Diner,” the Facebook post emphasizes. “We are 100 percent committed to serving you the dishes you fell in love with. We have been looking to add something to Starliner that will help with night sales. 90 percent of our sales are before 3pm.”

Initially, Facebook users were confused, because the post also states that Starliner Diner will potentially be offering York Steak House’s menu at their Starliner Diner location in Hilliard from 4pm-9pm, and they asked for customer feedback if they think that’s a good idea. Many customers said there’s too much crossover, and that each of them should stay separate entities.

In another post though, Starliner Diner clears the air. “The be clear, Starliner Diner and York Steak House will both stay open and run the way they have for decades. We will not change the great food these places have offered for so long.  IT’S NOT BROKE SO WE DON’T HAVE TO FIX IT.  And both places will stay in their location.  So please come visit us at Starliner Diner or York, you can’t go wrong.”

Loyal patrons of both Starliner Diner and York Steak House are ecstatic that the locations, which have been popular for decades, won’t change.

York Steak House was a chain of restaurants that first opened in 1966. At one time, there were 180 other restaurants across the nation, mostly inside popular malls. But when food courts became popular in the 80s, York’s sales declined, and most locations were discontinued and eventually all closed. Except for one, of course, still standing in Columbus at 4220 W. Broad St. You’ll still find the old-school charm, the sirloin steaks, and the salad bar that first made York’s so popular way back when, even now with its new owner.
