Ohio-based restaurant chain to close 140 ‘underperforming’ locations before end of year

“You look at a brand that’s 55 years old and some of those restaurants are quite out of date,” CEO Kirk Tanner told AP News.

Little does Tanner know, I happen to miss those outdated Wendy’s! The yellow & brown decor, the sunroom with the brown tinted windows, the ketchup served in those tiny white crinkled cups…they bring a sense of nostalgia for me.

But we understand that’s not the case for everyone. Wendy’s, the Dublin, Ohio-based fast-food chain, is planning on closing 140 of their U.S. Restaurants before the end of the year, and another 100 in May of 2025.

Tanner said the restaurants that are closing are “underperforming compared to others.” He told AP News, ““Our focus is on building new restaurants because we know they deliver well over the average of these poor-performing restaurants. We, overall, want the best restaurants for the customers and that customer experience we want to deliver.”

But with hundreds of Wendy’s closing, hundreds more are planning on opening. 250-300 new Wendy’s restaurants will be opening in the future. As of now, we’re not sure which exact locations will be closing, but Tanner said the closures would be nationwide.
