Popular eatery announces sudden North Market departure

Sav McKee

“This isn’t a sad post, this is a transition post,” said a popular soul food restaurant at North Market, located in the Short North.

Willowbeez SoulVeg is one of the only spots in town for completely vegan soul food with a creative twist, such as frying up banana blossom for a fishless fish fry. This family owned and operated eatery initially started as a vegan soul food pop up and catering company. They’re dedicated to sharing a plant-based lifestyle with the community, all while staying true to their soul food flavors.

Carnell Willoughby, owner of Willowbeez, announced on facebook that June 24 would be their last day at The North Market.

“Please, by all means, this is not a sad moment,” he said in a video statement. “We’ve been here three beautiful years, it went by crazy fast. I’d like to thank so many people.”

Willowbeez has yet to announce their next steps, but they did say that folks should stay tuned for pop-up dates.

We’ll sure miss that Mac&Plz and Bacon, Kale, & Tomato sandwich, and the Willoughbys’ hospitality.
