There will soon be one less place to grab home goods, pharmaceuticals, and groceries, all in one trip.

Walmart announced today, February 2nd, that it’s closing their store located at 3579 South High Street on February 16th. However, their pharmacy will remain open until March 4th.

This South Columbus Walmart “hasn’t performed as well as we hoped, and we made the decision to not renew the lease,” said a Walmart spokesman.

As for the numerous employees that help run the store, they’re eligible to transfer to another store, and they’ll be paid through May 3rd. Those unable to transfer to other stores will be accommodated through severance pay.

The release also said all employees are eligible to transfer to another store, and will be paid through May 3. After that point, those unable to transfer to another store will get severance pay.

It’s not too surprising that Walmart closed this store, considering in 2023, they closed 24 stores in total, from D.C. to Chicago, blaming underperformance and theft as a central reason for the closures.

“These stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years,” Walmart said in a 2023 press release regarding the Chicago closure.
