These are Columbus’ best ‘Hidden Gem Restaurants,’ says national travel guide

Sav McKee

Sure, the hot, new, trendy spot with the long waits and impossible-to-book reservations are popular for a reason, but there are a few under the radar spots in Columbus that deserve a lot of recognition, too.

Go To Destinations, a national travel guide that features the best things to do and best places to eat in a variety of states and cities has highlighted a couple of local restaurants in the underbelly of our city.

Here’s where they think are the best hidden gem restaurants in Columbus:

Understory – 2571 Neil Ave.
Tucked away in a historic building, with a patio covered in trees, Understory offers a unique cocktail lounge with a delicious restaurant attached, too. Pair their unique gimlets with some goat cheese croquettes, or if you’re looking for a cool new brunch spot, Go To Destinations suggests their Toad in the Hole, Mini Doughnuts, and Shrimp & Grits.

Alqueria Farmhouse – 247 King Ave.
Fresh, farm-to-table fare all in a cozy, intimate setting makes this restaurant a classic hidden gem. The menu changes frequently throughout the seasons, but Go To Destinations recommends the Duck Confit Gnocchi, the Shrimp & Drunken Goat Cheese, and the Farm House Burger.

Bonifacio – 1577 King Ave.
This family-run, traditional Filipino restaurant offers food you can’t find anywhere else in the city. Their Kamayan Boodle Flight features a huge Filipino feast of rice, BBQ, vegetables, and so much more, all spread out on the table on giant banana leaves, encouraging patrons to eat straight off the leaves with their hands (the boodle option is only available Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from 4pm-close). Their cocktails are pretty extraordinary too, featuring lychee and other fresh, tropical fruits. Go To Destinations recommends the BBQ Chicken Skewers, Lumpia, Chicken Thighs Rice Combo, Sauteed Bok Choi, Adobo Ribs, and Chicken Sizzling Sisig.
