30 electric scooters found dumped in Scioto River

Sav McKee

Trying to maneuver around the electric scooters parked inconveniently in the middle of pedestrian sidewalks is a rite of passage in this city, really.

Years after the electric scooter’s debut in Columbus, you’ll still find them parked in the middle of neighborhoods, in public parks, and even illegally blocking wheelchair ramps. With them being extremely heavy, too, and their wheels being locked unless you download the app and pay for it to move, it’s difficult to move them yourself.

Some people in the city don’t appear to have a problem moving them though. During a volunteer clean-up effort with Keep Columbus Beautiful, officers and metro park employees found about 30 scooters dumped in the Scioto River, right under the Rich Street Bridge last week.

Eerie photos on Keep Columbus Beautiful’s Facebook page show Uber Scooters, Bird, and Lime, covered in mud. The Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, who helped get the scooters out, said they’re not sure why the scooters were thrown into the river, but it seems like some of them have been in there for awhile.
