Central Ohio brewery giving out 73 pounds of free beans, potentially filling kiddie pool with beans, tonight only

“I don’t think it is [National Bean Day],” Walking Distance Brewing Co. owner Teddy Valinski pondered when asked why the Marysville Brewing plans to give away more than 70 pounds of free beans tonight. “We just feel like eating beans and celebrating.”

For one night only, Walking Distance, which is located at 222 E. 8th St. in Marysville, will be cooking no less than 73 pounds beans on an open fire, and handing them out to guests for free throughout the night. The bean-filled event begins at 5 p.m.

The best part? There’s no limit to the amount of beans people can eat.

“As long as nobody eats 73 pounds worth,” Valinski said. “I think we’re going to have someone walk in with a bell and say ‘Come get your beans,’ every hour or so, and they’ll just ladle them out to people.”

Valinski said the event was created on Dec. 7, the day marijuana was made recreational legal in the state of Ohio. To purchase all of the legumes, he made the decision to buy in bulk at Gordon Food Service.

“At first I thought I was going to have to go to Kroger and clean them out,” he said with a laugh.

Additionally, Valinski said, “if enough people bring beans,” the brewery will be able to fill a kiddie pool with beans. They are also open to securing a corporate sponsor and filled the pool with “the sponsor’s preferred beans.” These beans will act as decoration only (meaning they won’t be consumed), the perfect postmodern centerpiece for a night as wacky and wonderful as Walking Distance’s free bean evening.
