A former Root Insurance executive will spend more than four years in federal prison after embezzling more than $10 million from the local insurance company,

According to a press release from the Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Ohio, 43 year-old Brinson Caleb Silver was sentenced to more than four years in federal prison this week after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud and and one count of contempt of court.

According the Attorney’s Office, Silver served as the Chief Marketing Officer for Root, Inc. a Columbus-based car insurance company. From November 2021-November 2022, he entered into contracts with other businesses for marketing services, and diverted portions of those funds into accounts he controlled.

“Silver used the millions he embezzled to buy a $1.4 million dollar yacht, a Mercedes-Benz G550 for nearly $165,000, an amphibious plane, luxury watches and other items,” the press release said. It also claims he paid $20,000 for plastic surgery.

Following the scheme, Root sued Silver, who failed to show at a hearing for his civil case and “instead spent lavishly while traveling the globe.”

He was also ordered to pay restitution to Root.
