Ohio billionaire planning to dive to ‘Titanic’ in $20M sub
A Dayton billionaire is on a mission to show that deep-sea exploration is actually safe, despite what happened to other billionaires who tried to venture down to the depths of the Titanic last year.
Real estate investor Larry Connor, who’s the managing partner of Dayton’s The Connor Group, said that he and Patrick Lahey, who’s the co-founder of Triton Submarines, will plunge 2.3 miles down to the ocean floor to visit the Titanic ruins – all in a $20 million, two-person submarine.

“I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way,” Connor told the Wall Street Journal.
The vessel they’ll take, dubbed the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, has been in the works for a decade, according to Connor.
After the Oceangate Submarine imploded last June, killing all five people on board, Connor called Lahey and urged him to build a better submarine to demonstrate to the world that diving to Titanic-level depths is completely safe.
It’s still unclear when this second billionaire-Titanic-exploration will take place.
