Storied Ohio bread-maker behind Columbus, New York bakeries dies

One of the most decorated bread bakers in the Buckeye State has passed away.

According to her obituary, Marion resident Sarah Black, passed away on Feb. 15. She was 69.

A Marion native and Miami University graduate, Black spent multiple decades in New York City, working at well-know  restaurants like Union Square Cafe and The Quilted Giraffe. She helped launch Tomcat Bakery, a renowned New York bakery that supplied many of the city’s most respected eateries with bread, and served as a consultant for Whole Foods and Pepperidge Farm.

After relocating back to her native Ohio, Black helped open Flowers & Bread, a bakery and floral studio in Clintonville. The concept closed in 2020 and was replaced by Pattycake Bakery. It later became The Flower & Bread Society, which did not operate a brick and mortar location but continued to offer baking and floral arrangement classes.

Black specialized in baking bread, particularly baguettes, ciabatta and focaccia.
