Check out this local, general market where everything is made in Ohio

The art of browsing, tasting, trying, and leisurely shopping – well, it seems to be lost these days with the rise of quick internet purchases. But Karla Larson-Miller and Mary Lemaster are changing the way we shop and consume with their unique general market and home goods store which has quickly become a go-to destination for Ohio residents and visitors alike.

This quaint, Old Hilliard market, MAK Home Furnishings, is filled to the brim with goods from over 100 talented Ohio artisans that are all made, upcycled, or recycled in Ohio, with a few sourced vintage pieces per request. These skilled craftspeople create one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect the rich heritage of Ohio – hand-crafted tables using wood from barns that have been torn down, pottery that’s made from Ohio locals, upcycled lighting fixtures, repurposed, art, hand-poured soy candles, and hand-sewn pillows made by a retired 80-year-old woman who stitches them for the store when she can’t sleep.

It doesn’t just stop there. Although there are plenty of home goods to choose from, MAK Home Furnishings also offers a market section, complete with locally made popcorns, breads, sauces, honey, spreads, jams, and even soaps, t-shirts, and soon, local butter, milk, and possibly pickles. “We have everything that you might need for your home,” said Larson-Miller.

One of the core principles of MAK Home Furnishings is its commitment to sustainability. Their upcycled and refurbished goods, as well as products from local artisans, contribute to the preservation of the environment. You can shop here with confidence, knowing that your purchase is both ethically and environmentally responsible.

Beyond being a retail space, MAK Home Furnishings actively engages with the local community. The store hosts regular VIP events and community nights that feature the very same artisans that are crafting the items found throughout the store. One hundred central Ohioans attended the first VIP event, trying samples of locally made beer bread paired with homemade jams and spreads. “We’re creating a space that gives people somewhere to go, and something to do,” reminded Larson-Miller.

MAK Home Furnishings first started in Larson-Miller’s hair salon in Hilliard, called Bella Capelli Salone, where hand-crafted, Ohio-made artisan goods were showcased. After clients showed interest and demand, Larson-Miller and her business partner Lemaster knew that they were ready for a more permanent space. They chose Old Hilliard, and moved into the storefront in 2022.

“There’s a flower shop and places with food and alcohol in Old Hilliard, but with MAK Home Furnishings, now there’s a place to really shop around,” Larson-Miller emphasized.

Larson-Miller and Lemaster, both longtime friends, are proud of the beautiful space they’ve created together – one that not only fuels the hobbies of other makers in Ohio, but also fuels their own, too.  As Larson-Miller put it, “This store is a breath of fresh air. We look forward to keep growing from here.”

You can still browse MAK Home Furnishings selection online, and they offer local pick-up and delivery as well. They’re located at 4055 Main St., Suite 100 if you want to take an in-person look at exceptional, hand-built benches, stained glass windows, hand-crafted soaps, hand-poured candles, charcuterie boards, and so much more.
