When we were in elementary, we were studying spelling, hula hooping, and watching cartoons. But here in Columbus, the kiddos are hustling to get their ventures off the ground. There’s nothing like a nine-year-old starting a successful small business to make you feel really bad about your life.
Tiger Mushroom Farms LLC
From planting cat grass and basil seeds at a Boy Scout meeting to heading up his own business, Te’Lario Watkins II is owing the mushroom game. The draw to mushrooms was that they can be grown in the dark. So with a single mushroom kit, he started an enterprise at the ripe age of seven and then cultivated it into a tiny, homegrown empire by the age of 10.
Laine Avenue
After struggling to find a bag that worked for her needs, 16-year-old Emily and her mother took it upon themselves to create the ultimate book bag mad for students by students. These convertible packs are made with interchangeable zipper flaps, durable brushed cotton, and an ergonomic design.
Random Acts of Brownies
Jeanie, a fourth grader, started baking brownies when she was just two years old. It wasn’t long before her dad was proudly sharing them off at work with Jeanie in tow, in what would later become known as “Random Acts of Brownies.” From gluten free goodies to peanut butter Buckeyes, the treats have been a hot commodity for two years.
Ears On
Eden didn’t let a hearing disability hold her back—in fact, she used it as an opportunity to make life easier for hundreds of children in Columbus and beyond. She and her mom teamed up to create a hearing aid donation resource so kids can get their “ears on” in a much less expensive way.
Sweet E’s Cookies
After suffering from a life-changing anaphylactic reaction from pistachios when she was only two-years-old, Emerson later discovered her passion and love for baking. Together, Emerson and her mom created delicious, allergy-friendly chocolate chip cookies that kept friends coming back for more.
Books for Bedtime
One philanthropic 11-year-old has managed to collect over 58,000 books for needy children. Meagan is the proud young face of Books for Bedtime who is looking to take her company even further.
