“Very achievable dream,” Save The Crew releases stadium renderings
In the midst of the drama of the Columbus Crew’s potential move to Austin, Texas, the grassroots organizations vying for them to stay has released renderings of a new downtown soccer stadium.
Save The Crew worked with the Columbus soccer community, architects, planners, marketers, and volunteers to come up with a plan for a new 22,000-seat stadium on the plot of land currently owned by Nationwide Realty on the bank of the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers, just to the west of Huntington Park.
They boast it would be just a short walk from Huntington Park and Nationwide Arena.
Here are some of its features:
- A “breathtaking” view of downtown.
- Four futsal courts will be available for 24/7 public use, accessible via street parking.
- A large atrium in the southwest corner houses a team-museum, restaurant, and event venue that is open for regular business hours year-round and would also be available for private and corporate events.
- A plaza with a permanent pavilion, just inside the gates for both matchday entertainment as well as special events like World Cup watch parties.

- A team shop, also open year-round, will be housed in this atrium as well.
- Off-street parking will be able to service these four-season businesses.
- A practice facility will sit next door on a parcel of land currently owned by Schottenstein Real Estate Group, which was previously offered to Columbus Crew SC as the site of a new downtown Columbus stadium
- An underground garage with 1,200 spaces plus 173 restricted access parking spots for players, coaches, and the media. 600 spaces, will be equipped with Level 2 electric vehicle chargers.
- 128 bicycle parking spots. The site plan reflects the planned bike bridge connector and expanded Hocking Street for improved ingress/egress from games.
- A first-of-its-kind electric, autonomous circular route shuttle will run between the existing parking structures within the vicinity of the area and nearby amenities.
- Translucent photovoltaics will be used as the roofing material to provide carbon free electricity generation while covering fans from the elements.
Mapfre Stadium has been under fire for its location and outdatedness so the renderings were designed to create an updated an optimal fan experience in downtown Columbus.
They call it “a very achievable dream.”
“We have put painstaking detail into making this as feasible as possible with the information available to us,” Save The Crew wrote in the proposal. “We’ve taken growth and profitability into account, because we believe that proper hands-on ownership can mean guaranteed success in this community. This can happen, it only takes private investment.“
