Party online with Dublin this weekend—plus festival cancellations
Latin festival: Online
As with most things in 2020, another beloved celebration, Festival Latino 2020, will not proceed as usual. However, in its place, CAPA is hosting a week-long online event called ¡Viva Festival Latino! from Aug. 3-7 to fill the cultural gap.
This year’s event is presented by HONDA with additional support provided by Nationwide, AEP Foundation, L Brands Foundation, City of Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks, and Abbott.
The week-long online experience will feature everything from Latin music to cooking demonstrations as well as online salsa and flamenco dancing lessons, activities for children, and a fashion show with images from years past.
Music acts will feature DJ Cale (Derek Amaya)–who’s collaborated with artists such as Daddy Yankee, Prince Royce, Farruko, Fuego, Extreme, and De La Ghetto–as well as a Funk Salsa Urban from New York City.
Latin cuisine will also be highlighted, including cooking demonstrations by Nadia De Jesus, owner and operator of D’Nadia Catering, and Omar D’Angelo of Barroluco Argentine Comfort Food. Participants can learn how to make regional dishes such as mashed plantains and fried cheese, and empanadas in their own homes and even where to source special ingredients.

Dublin Irish Festival: Online
The Dublin Irish Festival has announced its transition to an online format this year.
The festival, one of the largest Irish heritage festivals in North America, will feature music live streams, as well as a virtual 5k fun run and much more.
Join in on contests such as a reddest-hair competition and an Irish dancing TikTok challenge.
To complement the festivities, an Irish jig playlist will be available on Spotify to accompany your celebrations.

Italian Festival: Canceled
The Taste of Italy Italian Festival hosted each year by Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church has been canceled –the official reason being the difficulty in maintaining required social distancing and ensuring the safety of all participants.
Held each fall, the Italian festival offers live music and food off Fourth Street, as well as a bocce tournament and cooking demonstrations.
The Italian festival has been held for the past 41 years by Saint Johns Church, and has become a mainstay of fall in the short north. The festival will join the Greek Festival, and Columbus Art Festival in the list of events canceled due to the virus.
Greek Festival: Canceled
The annual labor day Greek Festival at Annunciation Orthodox Church has been canceled due to safety concerns concerning the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Okotoberfest: Canceled
What was to be the 55th annual Oktoberfest, held Sept. 11-13 at the Ohio Expo Center, has been called off. However, the event already has a date set for their 2021 event, when it will be staged from Sept. 10-12.
“Columbus Oktoberfest is one of Central Ohio’s longest running festival traditions and we’re heartbroken that we can’t gather together and celebrate this year,” said Carla Epler, COO of Schmidt’s and Columbus Oktoberfest executive director. “Of course, our top priority is the safety of our guests and a commitment to doing our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 so we can all gather together soon.”
