Jeni’s melts customer hearts

It’s been a tough time for ice cream lovers in Columbus. Following reports and recalls from several companies over Listeria – most notably Blue Bell IceCream – Jeni’s decided to recall all their products, as well as close all their scoop shops until the problem can be fixed.

And while we all miss our Buckeye State and Salty Caramel, the company’s decision to put customers’ health first has garnered praise from locals, as well as national sources. Business First mentioned in their morning roundup that trade publication, Food Safety News, looked at how Blue Bell and Jeni’s handled their respective recalls. And while Blue Bell did everything right, Jonathan Bernstein, a Los Angeles-based crisis management consultant, told FSN that Jeni’s response was “technically perfect.”

Just walk over to their Short North scoop shop – you can see the love and appreciation right on  the door. People and companies (I’ve spotted Whence and Hot Chicken Takeover) have left love notes for the company.

Jeni’s CEO John Lowe told a crowd at Columbus Startup Week, “We’re not sure what it’s gonna cost, we’re not sure how we’re going to fund it and we’re not sure of what it leads to in terms of how long we’ll be closed in the like.” But back they will be. And we’ll be waiting with open arms and spoons. (deb)
