The best Ohio-made gift ideas for foodies

Jack McLaughlin

It’s a struggle we all know: finding gifts for the foodies in our life.

If you can’t tell the difference between manchego and gruyere, or if you can’t name the best spots to grab a loaf of homemade artisan bread in the city, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Featuring everything from kitchen implements to herbal salts and seasonal teas, our list of the best Ohio-crafted gift ideas for foodies should win you some (gourmet) brownie points this holiday season.

Chef Knives

Warther Cutlery, Dover, Ohio

From full kitchen knife sets to carving tools, Warther Cutlery has put forward nothing but quality cutting tools since 1902. The business, now in its 3rd and 4th generations of family ownership, has custom-made knives for names such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Gerald Ford, and Nelson Mandella. These tempered, hammered chef knives are still grinded by hand and feature a timeless birch handle.

Culinary Salt Gift Set

Foraged and Sown, Columbus

Foraged and Sown is an organic farm with multiple central Ohio growing sites, including in a North Linden backyard. But they’re not on this list because they’re a fascinating novelty: They make really, really good products, selling everything from tea to preserves to cooking herbs. One of our favorites is their culinary salt collection, featuring a variety of sea salts boosted with the addition of grown or foraged herbs. It includes Soil, Sun & Sea, highlighting homegrown garlic and herbs; Lemon Spicebush, Alaea red sea salt with native spicebush berries and lemon; and PSR Black, which contains black lava sea salt, parsley, sage, and rosemary.

Pizza Peel

ThreeFrogStudios, Akron, Ohio

Because making pizza is more of a dedication than it is a hobby, your loved one is going to need a host of goodies to make sure they churn out the best pies. These peels–which are all crafted from a single piece of ash or butternut wood–embrace the material’s natural grain and imperfections, making each one totally unique. They come in sizes between 30 and 40 inches, and you can even request a custom engraving.

Plush Daybreak Dog Toy

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing, Columbus, Ohio

Foodies have dogs too, you know. And if there’s a better way to showcase your love of great Columbus-brewed beer while also pleasing Fido, we haven’t found one. This plush dog toy, which does contain a squeaker, mimics the appearance (complete with a perfect replica of its eye-catching orange label) of the brewery’s Daybreak coffee vanilla cream ale. And while the plush says it’s 6% ABV, trust us that this one is actually alcohol free.

Walnut Wine Tree

Clark Fine Wood Products, Burton, Ohio

Part of the joy of wine collecting is undeniably aesthetic, and being able to organize your bottles in a pleasing way is critical to that. These beautiful walnut wine trees (Clark also offers a variety of others crafted from cherry, maple, red oak, and more) all used kiln-dried hardwood from northeast Ohio and are cut, shaped, and sanded entirely by hand. This tree holds four bottles, but the Burton artisans sell several different sizes as well.

Handcrafted Picnic Basket

Amish Baskets and Beyond, Elyria, Ohio

A lot has changed in the world, but a peaceful picnic in a beautiful setting still seems to be the ideal meal for so many. And what better way to tote your lunch fare than in these beautiful, handcrafted Amish picnic baskets. Coming in a variety of sizes, each basket is dated and signed by the Amish craftsman who created it, and you can even customize yours by requesting a number of different colored accent strips free of charge.

Winter Tea Variety Pack

Ohio Tea Company, Canton, OH

Last but definitely least is this massive set of 12 different seasonal teas from Canton’s Ohio Tea Company. Complex and aromatic, these loose teas are robust enough to enjoy on their own beside the fire, or paired alongside any number of different foods. This affordable collection of custom blends features enough loose leaf to make two different cups of eight ounce tea each, with flavors such as Holiday Earl Gray, Vanilla Mint Chai, Blueberry Crumble, and Christmas Morning, blending a black tea base with apple pieces, organic cinnamon, and apple cinnamon french toast flavoring to recall your childhood holiday mornings.
