First phase of coronavirus vaccine distribution to begin mid-December

By the middle of the month, Ohio should start receiving the first batch of COVID-19 vaccination doses for hospitals and drug stores.

According to a Dec. 4 release from Governor Mike DeWine’s office, the state’s first phase of distribution is slated to begin on or around Dec. 15. The limited supply will be given to healthcare workers and personnel who are routinely involved in caring for COVID-19 patients including: EMS responders, state psychiatric hospital staff and patients, and residents and staff at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, veterans homes and group homes or centers.

Vaccine shipment figures currently show 9,750 doses from Pfizer for Ohio’s prepositioned hospital sites on or around Dec. 15. An additional 88,725 doses of the vaccine will go to Walgreens and CVS for those in congregate care settings.

Moderna has pledged to supply 201,000 vaccine doses on or around Dec. 22. This shipment will go to 98 hospitals for those who are exposed to COVID-19 patients and 108 health departments for frontline workers.

A following vaccine shipment of about 123,000 doses from Pfizer is also expected on or around Dec. 23 and will go to Walgreens and CVS for those in congregate care settings.

Finally, another 148,000 doses of the vaccine from Pfizer and 89,000 doses from Moderna are expected a few days later.

According to the release, a second dose for individuals in these groups will be delivered and administered “in the future”. No date has been given for when the general public would have the option to receive vaccinations.
