Snow Day: Check out our favorite sledding spots outside of Metro Parks

Snow Day: Check out our favorite sledding spots outside of Metro Parks

The skies have opened up and absolutely dumped snow on central Ohio over the last few weeks. And while you could complain about the condition of the roads, or worry about whether or not your front walkway has been salted for the fourth time today, our official recommendation is for you to go sledding.

We’ve put together a list of our favorite sledding spots in the city that aren’t located in a Columbus Metro Park (for Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks sledding spots, check out this story). So lace up those boots and grab the slickest piece of plastic you can find. We’ll see you at the bottom of the hill.

Chief Leatherlips Monument
7377 Riverside Dr., Dublin

Under the watchful eyes of the former Wyandot leader, cold-weather visitors to Dublin’s Scioto Park can take in some of the best sledding Columbus has to offer. A stone’s throw away from the Scioto River, this family-friendly spot regularly sets up hay bales at the bottom of the hills, making it a safe experience for everyone involved.

Fryer Park
3899 Orders Rd., Grove City

While this one isn’t a part of the Columbus Metro Parks system, this spot still becomes a winter wonderland in its own right. Why? In large part because Fryer Park has its own designated sledding hill. It can be a bit steep, but honestly, isn’t that the point?

Rock Mill Lake Wildlife area
Mt. Zion Road between Wilson Road and Lithopolis Road

While this one’s a bit of a hike, the scenery and proximity to Rockmill Brewing (for a warm-up drink) are both major pluses. Also referred to as just Rock Mill dam, these hills offer quality sledding among quiet and contemplative scenery that’s second to none.

Antrim Park
5800 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus

For those out sledding with children, this might be the spot for you. Antrim Park, located north of Clintonville, is operated by the city of Columbus and offers smaller, shorter hills that can provide safer sledding opportunities for younger kids. This 120-acre park also offers access to the scenic Olentangy Greenway Trail that snakes along the Olentangy River and is a great spot to take a family walk when a break from sledding is needed.

Glen Oak Park
7126 Blue Holly Dr., Lewis Center

Located North of Columbus in Lewis Center, this hill is definitely worth the trip. Similar to Fryer Park, Glen Oak offers a large, man-made sledding hill (near the parking area at the southern end of the park) that remains open throughout the winter months, as long as there’s enough snow.

Miller’s Hill
On Parkview Avenue near the intersection of Maryland Avenue

As an east side resident myself, the first place I send anyone looking for a sledding hill in my area is Miller’s Hill in Bexley. A well-known sledding spot situated near Alum Creek, Jeffrey Park, and Nelson Park (both also great for sledding), this iconic location offers some top-tier sledding action nestled in a peaceful setting.

Delaware State Park
75 Downing Rd., Delaware

This is another spot that’s a bit of hike, but likely well-worth your time. Located in a scenic state park along the shores of Delaware lake, the popular sledding hills at this park offer something from everyone. From gentler slopes (if you have the kids in tow), to bigger, steeper spots, you’re going to find something that suits your sledding needs.
