Online pierogi vendor to open Westerville storefront this fall

While they’re more commonly associated with Cleveland and northeast Ohio, pierogi get plenty of love in Columbus, too. So much, in fact, that the city will soon be adding another restaurant featuring the beloved Eastern European dumplings to its ranks.

Sweet CLE-‘Bus, the popular online-only pierogi vendor, will be opening its first-ever brick and mortar storefront, located at 447 Lazelle Rd.

“Continuing the way that it was done long term truly was not a viable option,” said owner Lizz Szabo in a statement on the company’s website. “This will be able to truly streamline your small-batch, fresh, pierogi experience.” While the spot doesn’t have a firm opening date yet, Szabo has pegged early September as a target.

A native of Cleveland’s Slavic Village, Szabo grew up eating Eastern European indulgences of all sorts, from pierogi to kielbasa and kolacky. When she relocated to Columbus a decade ago, though, options for these dishes were limited.

So after rekindling her love for cooking, Szabo decided to launch Sweet CLE-‘Bus in late 2020 as an online “pierogi bakery” where customers ordered small-batch, scratch-made pierogi to reheat and serve at their convenience. The business also offers Kolackys (Polish pastries with jam filling), and paczki (traditional Polish donuts) seasonally.

As Szabo grows her Westerville business, though, guests can likely expect to see even more Polsih delicacies hit the menu. “This is only the beginning,” she said on the company’s website.

And that’s not all, either. Sweet CLE-‘Bus will soon be selling their very own line of merch, including a pair of original hat designs. Who said pierogi swag doesn’t exist?
