See what’s going in the old Spagio spot

Gourmet taco outfit Agave & Rye will open its first Columbus location this September at 1295 Grandview Ave. The spot will be the 10th location overall and the fourth in the state.

The move will be a homecoming of sorts for co-founders and husband and wife Wade and Yavonne Sarber, who in 2011 opened de-NOVO Bistro & Bar here.

“We knew how to make a restaurant look great, and we knew what food tasted good, but we had no idea how to properly run a proper restaurant,” Yavonne Sarber said.

But after de-NOVO closed at the beginning of 2018, the Sarbers were able to take the experience they gained and use it to open the first Agave & Rye that same year in Covington, Kentucky.

Sarber said moving into a space with such a rich history as the Grandview Avenue spot is meaningful for her and her husband.

“Now we get to show Columbus what we’re really all about,” she said.

Sarber said Agave & Rye’s concept hinges on French-inspired cuisine delivered within the vessel of a taco, made with a crunchy shell inside and a soft shell outside. The tacos are filled with many of the same foods one would find at a bistro or a fine dining restaurant.

“It makes a lot of the food really approachable,” she said.

In addition to a plethora of tacos, Agave & Rye offers other options as well, such as their own take on a Lo Mein bowl, and their epic chicken sandwich. There are also Big and Little Munchies, such as the crispy Brussels sprouts, the Asian-inspired fried cauliflower, and the Carne Asada steak and Asian Lo Mein wrapped in an egg roll.

The Columbus spot comes at a time of growth for the eatery. Saber said they’re opening locations in Indianapolis as well as Cleveland, and then plan to spend time focusing on opening spots in between their current locations.

“We are so excited to share what we’ve been able to create,” She said.
