Taste of Greece coming next month

Spanakopita. Moussaka. And most importantly, baklava. 

These and other decadent Greek delights can be found at Taste of Greece, May 14-16 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. 

Event Organizer John Bizios said that while he and other Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral parishioners are still hopeful that they can hold their annual Greek Festival in September, it’s possible that it might not be doable again this year. 

“Due to the pandemic, we’ve had to kind of change the way we are doing things,” Bizios said.

The Greek Festival is typically held Labor Day weekend every year and has been going on for more than 40 years, Bizios said. The event typically draws as many as 30,000 people to the festival. 

But parishioners opted to hold the Taste of Greece event now. 

“We’re grateful that we have an outlet like this that we can actually do this,” Bizios said.

This COVID-conscious Taste of Greece event will be carryout only, and masks and social distancing will be expected. All the dinners will be fully cooked; special orders or call-in orders aren’t available.

Each dinner entree, except for a large Greek salad, comes with four sides including tyropita (blended cheeses wrapped in a buttered fillo dough), spanakopita (a blend of cheeses and herbs wrapped in a buttered, fillo dough), Greek-style green beans, and Greek lemon potatoes. 

You’ll get to choose from Moussaka, (layers of eggplant, sliced potatoes, ground beef, and a cream sauce), Pastitsio (layers of Greek pasta, grated cheese, ground beef, and cream sauce), chicken breast, and salad. 

There’s also gyros and a plethora of pastries–get 2 for $5 sweets or bring a whole box home for $14. 

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 14 and 15, and from noon to 7 p.m. May 16. For more information, visit columbusgreekfestival.com.
