This new pizzeria is serving up square slices in Old North

Square Slice Pizzeria, the new za concept that opened Aug. 13 in the Old North Arcade, is serving up Detroit-style pies with a side of nostalgia.

“The inspiration for Square Slices comes from what I’d do as a kid on a friday or saturday night,” said Ben Morgan, owner of Old North Arcade as well as the new pizzeria. “I would get together with friends, play video games, and have a sleepover. The idea that we would eat anything other than pizza was never a question.”

And after Morgan decided to close the previous eatery inside the Arcade, Forty’s Chicken & Waffles, when COVID-19 broke out last year, there was never a question about what its replacement would be, either.

“There weren’t many true Detroit-style pizza places in Columbus, and it’s so great for creating layers of flavor,” he said.

Using from-scratch focaccia dough and premium ingredients, Morgan launched the first Square Slice location earlier this summer in Huntington, West Virginia.

“Our pilot location was doing great, so we thought we would bring the squad up here and get the concept installed,” he said.

And just like its Huntington counterpart, Square Slice has been performing well since its opening. So well, in fact, that Morgan is planning to expand the eatery’s hours starting this week.

The new Old North location was originally only open on Friday and Saturday, but Morgan will now have the restaurant open on Sunday as well. He also plans to launch Columbus-area Doordash deliveries from the pizzeria this week.

Square Slice is currently looking for more employees to help their High Street spot continue growing, and they’re starting at $14 an hour with no experience required.

Even if you don’t choose to throw on an apron yourself, the next time you’re in the mood for pizza, remember that it’s hip to be square.
