Doorbell camera captures awkward interaction between local package thief and FedEx driver

The Columbus Police Department (CPD) is attempting to locate a porch pirate who appears to have been unusually bold in a theft that occurred last year.

According to a press release from CPD issued in December, an individual is wanted in regards to the felony theft of a package that was taken from a home on the 1300 block of Minnesota Ave.

The incident, which occurred on May 31 at 12:56 p.m., was captured on the home’s doorbell camera.

Police have a released a series of the photos, which depict an unusual package theft.

In the first photo, the suspect, a man wearing a red sweatshirt with the hood up, reaches for a package on the porch of the Minnesota Avenue home. The FedEx driver and delivery vehicle can be seen directly behind him.

In several following images, the delivery driver—presumably unaware of the man’s intentions—has him step aside to take a photo of the package (likely for proof of delivery). In the final image, the suspect appears to approach the package again after the driver captures a photo.

It’s unclear exactly what the package contained, but in the state of Ohio, theft because a felony when the stolen property is worth more than $1,000.
