Update: Considering closure, Neighbor’s Deli remaining open for now

Jack McLaughlin

Due to the massive public response following the news of a potential closure in January, Neighbor’s Deli has decided to stay the course until at least June.

According to owner Jon Snyder, Neighbor’s will now stay open until at least June, when the lease on their current building is up. Snyder noted that if he can find a manager and long-term, reliable help between now and then, Neighbor’s could continue to stay open indefinitely.

“It’s amazing, the public sentiment,” Snyder said of how customers reacted when they learned the longstanding North Side sandwich shop may close. “It’s been great to hear the support, to hear people want me to keep going.”

He cited staffing concerns as his largest problem, but noted a variety of issues contributing to the potential closure, including supply chain issues stemming from COVID-19.

Sometimes turning in 80-plus hour workweeks, Snyder said he will have to adjust Neighbor’s hours to keep the store open until June. This means the sandwich shop will be open only five days a week, instead of six like it is now, in the near future.
