Andrew Levitt (Nina West) to star in Broadway ‘Hairspray’ revival

Andrew Levitt, who Columbus knows and loves as his drag alter ego, Nina West, will be taking the national stage in his own right.

According to a release, Levitt will portray Edna Turnblad in the U.S. National Tour revival of “Hairspray”. Originally slated to open last year, the production was delayed because of the pandemic.

“It’s a brand-new world we find ourselves in today, and HAIRSPRAY is meeting this challenge full-on with even more joy and purpose,” said Director Jack O’Brien in a prepared statement. “Our fable of “The Little Dancing Engine That Could” is even more relevant than 20 years ago when it first burst onto the scene. With the renewed, refreshed energy of the unforgettable “Nina West” as Edna and a whole new generation of wildly talented kids across the board, we cannot wait to raise the various roofs once more with dance, joy, music, and that glorious, famous, energy-packed score.”

Though additional shows are going to be announced in the future, as of now, Ohio shows include Dec. 14 at Clark State PAC in Springfield, Jan. 4-9 at Arnoff Center in Cincinnati, and April 12-13 at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron.
