New Jamaican beef patty restaurant opens on Near East Side

While Jamaican patties–which feature a variety of proteins encased in a flaky pastry shell–have long been popular in New York City, Florida and other large cities or coastal hubs, they’re slowly making their way into Ohio.

And now, the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood is home to a brand-new Jamaican patty eatery.

The Patty Shop, located at 323 N. 20th St., officially opened for business last week.

Owned and operated by New York transplant James Simmons, the new restaurant serves patties filled with jerk chicken, curry chicken, jerk beef, beef and cheese, in addition to a variety of vegetarian options, like spinach and cheese.

“What I’m doing is bringing something new to the city. I realize a lot of my customers have never tried Jamaican beef patties,” Simmons said. “They’re affordable, and my customers taste them and can’t believe how good they are.”

A variety of fruit juices are also served at The Patty Shop, including several more unique options, like traditional Jamaican Irish sea moss juice and peanut juice.

The one thing The Patty Shop doesn’t offer, however, is dipping sauce, as Simmons believes Jamaican beef patties are meant to be eaten as-is. “We have a lot of people looking for a dipping sauce and I have to let them know: You do not use a sauce,” he said with a laugh. “It’s just a straight Jamaican beef patty.”
