Following the invasion of Ukraine, GrubHub cut ties with Yandex, the Russian company that created the original fleet of food-delivery robots used on the Ohio State campus last year and in early 2022.

And now, the school and Grubhub are ready to test a new line of robots.

According to Grubhub’s Senior Associate of Corporate Communications Jenna DeMarco, Grubhub will begin testing robots manufactured by Cartken, an Oakland, California-based robotics company, later this month.

“We take seriously our commitment to the universities that we partner with – and ultimately the student diners who order from the Grubhub platform – to make food ordering and delivery available on campus,” DeMarco said. “We’re working with our campus partners to provide robot delivery and are testing a U.S.- based provider at Ohio State University starting this month.”

Similar to their Yandex counterparts, the Cartken robots will be self-driving, relying on sensors and artificial intelligence, the company’s website said.
