The Weekender: Seafood Boil

Alyson Strickler-Vazquez

We are heading into spring, and Lent is here, so now is the perfect time to focus on some delicious seafood options in the #614. The best part of a seafood boil is dumping fresh mounds of seafood onto a paper-lined table and digging in with both hands. Partaking with a group of friends makes it even better; just make sure everyone knows they will be getting messy.

Kai’s Crab Boil is still one of the best-kept secrets in Columbus and one of my first recommendations when someone tells me they love seafood. The seafood spread is ever-changing as seasonal selections are added to the chalkboard featured in the main dining area, a key factor to knowing it’s fresh! Kai’s offers the option to create-your-own feast or choose a pre-crafted signature boil. The Kai’s Kajun house-sauce is incredible, especially when you throw in corn, potato, and sausage and let the flavors meld together. This is definitely the place you give in and wear the plastic bib and gloves.

Must have: Start your dinner with a side of Kai’s house-made cornbread

Two Claws Juicy Cajun Seafood, located in Westerville, is bringing the heat with their Cajun-style seafood feasts. Ordering is a breeze: choose your seafood, seasoning, and how much kick you want. Two Claws even offers both green and black mussels, which is a game-changer here in Ohio. I recommend going with their Two-Claws Signature Spice, which packs just enough heat to tickle your tastebuds without overpowering the seafood. The add-ins (egg, potato, sausage, corn) get just as much love, tossed in to cook with the same sauce and seasonings. Two Claws specializes in Cajun seafood boils; the crawfish is a must!

Cajun Boil Bar is bringing lots of Cajun flare to Cbus, including gator bites and house-made gumbo brimming with chicken, sausage, and okra. Cajun Boil Bar instructs you to get your hands dirty when ordering your seafood by the pound. The seasonal #1 Louisiana Blue Crab, has a home on the menu along with other favorites like headless shrimp, mussels, crawfish, and multiple types of crab legs. Cajun Boil Bar automatically serves up corn and potato with each boil and allows you to select from a wide variety of sauces; my go-to’s are the House Special or the Homemade Cajun if you want some heat.

In the know: If you are looking to watch your waistline, try one of their low-calorie Signature Bombes

Just because Columbus isn’t a coastal town doesn’t mean our restaurants don’t have access to fresh seafood. You will find many of the restaurants above are bringing in fresh seafood multiple times a week. That is why it may be more costly. This weekend roll up your sleeves and dive into a spice-soaked seafood extravaganza at one of these local spots.
