Unique new Nepali-Indian restaurant and bar opens inside Columbus-area grocery store

The Nepali community of Columbus is coming together to offer authentic new food options.

Jhalpi Kitchen & Bar held its official grand opening in early May. Located at 859 Windmiller Dr. northeast of downtown Pickerington, the eatery is located inside GN International Grocery, the largest Nepali-owned grocery store in the country, which launched last fall.

And according to owner of GN International Govin Ghimiray, the new eatery is an example of the Columbus area’s Nepali community putting down roots and looking out for its own.

“When we were looking for tenants I gave the opportunity to [Jhalpi Kitchen & Bar] instead of a more established business,” Ghimiray said.

The new eatery—which also includes a full bar—was always part of the plan for GN International, Chimiray added. And while the spot may remind some of Momo Ghar’s first home inside Saraga International Grocery, Jhalpi is a far larger and more dine-in ready space, at nearly 3,000 square feet.

What the two eateries do share in common, however, is an enticing array of Nepali offerings. Momo can be found on Jhalpi’s menu, and the new restaurant offers a mix of Indian favorites like curries, vindaloo and tandoori alongside Nepali combination platters served with a variety of proteins.
