Man dies after saving drowning dog in Obetz

After initially surviving, a man who saved his dog from drowning in a Columbus-area quarry has died.

According to Police, on Monday morning, the Columbus Fire Department, Columbus Police, Obetz Police, and Franklin County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call from Dixon Quarry, located in Obetz just west of Three Creeks Metro Park.

James Stephens, 50, was pulled from the Dixon Quarry pond on Monday morning. While he was fishing, Stephens’ dog jumped into the water. Stephens followed in an attempt to rescue the pet.

The dog survived, and Stephens initially did as well. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition on Monday, but was pronounced dead yesterday.
