Police warn of door-to-door soliciting scam pretending to be Columbus non-profit

Jack McLaughlin

Columbus Police are urging residents to look out for phony solicitors going door to door posing as a legitimate Columbus non-profit.

According to a statement posted by Lt. Kincade of the Community Liason Unit, the Columbus nonprofit I Know I Can informed police of solicitors pretending to be members of their organization in at attempt to collect donations.

Police said I Know I Can does not go door-to-door asking for monetary donations.

“The solicitors are saying they are with IKIC or IKIC2 and are asking for donations to support students and sports teams,” the post reads. “They are asking residents to buy popcorn, candles and other items and asking for payment via Venmo or cash on the spot while speaking to residents. The Venmo account being used is setup under an individual’s name who is believed to be one of the solicitors.”

While police say the scam originated in Clintonville and North Linden, they believe it has likely moved to other areas as well.
