Columbus mall declared a public nuisance, could be seized without updates

Eastland Mall has formally been declared a public nuisance.

Following months of issues that include noise complaints, more than 1,000 potholes, malfunctioning lights and even a sinkhole in its parking lot, the property was officially declared a public nuisance by the Franklin County Environmental Court.

“The conditions at Eastland Mall are a hazard to the public and immediate action must be taken to bring the property into compliance, and that begins with property owners stepping up to make improvements,” City Attorney Zach Klein said in a press release. “Eastland Mall is important to our east side communities, and we’re prepared to pursue every legal option to hold property owners accountable and ensure the site’s long-term economic health.”

A court order is currently in effect on the property, requiring ownership to address a variety of issues across multiple deadline this summer.

A hearing will take place on Sept. 22 to determine the owner’s compliance. The property could be seized if the conditions are not met.
