New pizzeria opening next week in the former home of Neighbor’s Deli

It’s been a while since we said goodbye to Neighbor’s Deli, but by late next week, a new restaurant will open its doors inside the former home of the long-standing sandwich shop.

According to co-owner John Cordas, Shorty’s Pizza & Growl, will hold its grand opening at 2142 Henderson Rd. on Nov. 17.

Neighbors Deli closed its doors for good on May 21, after serving its brand of oversized sandwiches for more than a decade. The eatery and owner Jon Snyder quickly grew a sizable fanbase for its quality food and quirky atmosphere.

According to Cordas, Shorty’s plans to pick up where Neighbors Deli left, operating as a mostly carryout space, although limited seating is available.

“This is going to be our first time getting into the carryout-only game,” Cordas said. “[The Powell restaurant] is our larger location where we host a lot of people and partner with sports teams. Our Delaware location is a more of a family-based restaurant, a place you can walk to, but that one has about 70 seats still.”

Shorty’s offers pizza, sandwiches, wings and more, in addition to a wide variety of craft beer and wine. And while its pies aren’t ultra-thin and square cut like so many within the city, Cordas said he’s looking forward to the concept’s first-ever location in Columbus.

“Overall just excited. I gained more of my experience in the city and it’s nice to be back,” he said.
