OSU grad takes home Tony Award for role in Broadway musical

It’s not just defensive ends and speedy wide receivers making a name for Ohio State post-college, as one Buckeye alumnus recently took home the most sought-after prize in Broadway theater.

According to a press release from Ohio State’s Department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts, alum Bonnie Milligan won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Kimberly Akimbo.

Based on Lindsay Abaire’s comedy (also named Kimberly Akimbo), the musical follows a teenage girl with a rare disease that causes her to age four and a half times faster than others. Kimberly Akimbo debuted in December of 2021, and also received Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

Milligan, who received a BA from Ohio State in Theatre in 2006, won the Tony for playing the character of Aunt Debra.

“Aunt Debra is a terrible person—a thief, a narcissist, a liar, and a cheat. And if she weren’t portrayed with such disarming warmth and giddy charisma by Bonnie Milligan in Broadway’s Kimberly Akimbo, you might just hate her. But instead, you find yourself happily under her spell for the better part of two hours, and can easily see why a gaggle of high schoolers decide to help her embark on a little bit of mail fraud (we warned you—a crook!),” Towne & Country said about Mulligan’s performance.
