According to ‘Food & Wine,’ this Columbus restaurant has the best BBQ in Ohio

Last August, “Food & Wine” released a list of the best barbecue in every state. And their top spot for The Buckeye State is right here in Columbus.

While this likely doesn’t come as a surprise to the eatery’s sizable fanbase, Ray Ray’s Hog Pit was tapped by “Food & Wine” as Ohio’s best barbecue purveyor.

“There is so much barbecue in Ohio, but when you finally land at Ray Ray’s Hog Pit, with locations in and around Columbus, you kind of know the search is over; the original in Clintonville, a ramshackle setup evoking the East Side of Austin more than a bar parking lot near Ohio State, is top notch, though you can never really go wrong anywhere, as long as you start with a rack of taut, dry-rubbed baby backs, no sauce please, the better to taste every bite of that very fine pork,” the story reads.

The list goes on to cite owner and head chef James Anderson’s dedication to his craft, noting that he raises his own heritage breed of pig on a farm just outside of Columbus.

Anderson was also named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region in 2020. While this distinction is impressive for any chef, it happened before Ray Ray’s opened its first brick and mortar spot and was still operating solely as a food truck.

Today, Ray’s Ray’s operates multiple locations, including a dine-in restaurant in Granville that also regularly hosts speciality dinners.
